Our Story

Southern Finest started in 2011, in a small shopfront in Melbourne. One rail of clothing, a kettle in the back room, and a woman named Mabel who was tired of the same problem most women know. The beautiful things were never comfortable. The comfortable things never looked like much. And most of it was built to fall apart by the following season.

Mabel thought that was a poor deal. So she started choosing differently.

She picked pieces one at a time, by hand, and only the ones she would happily wear herself. She checked how a fabric felt against the skin. She checked how a hem sat. She asked whether a jacket would still look right in five years. If a piece couldn't answer that, it didn't go on the rail.

That was the whole idea. It hasn't really changed since.

Word got around the way it does, one woman telling another. People came back for the clothing, but they also came back because Mabel told them the truth. If something wasn't right for you, she said so, even when it meant the sale walked out the door. The shop became somewhere you could take your time, ask for a second opinion, and leave with something you actually loved.

Claire joined a few years in. She had grown up among the rails, so she picked most of it up without noticing: how to listen, how to reassure, how to help a woman feel like herself again in a fitting room. Mother and daughter behind the same counter, doing the same thing.

More women found us as the years went on, first through friends and family, later from all over Australia. We grew beyond Melbourne. The way we choose never did. Every piece is still selected slowly, by hand, and only if it earns a place in your wardrobe.

We are not a fashion label chasing the next thing, and we are not an online shop hoping you'll buy more than you need. We are a family boutique that has spent more than a decade paying attention to what Australian women actually want. Clothing that is comfortable, that looks considered, and that lasts longer than a season.

That is why the collection stays small. We would rather offer you a short rail worth owning than a wall of choices to wade through. And how you are treated matters as much as what you buy, whether it's your first order or your hundredth.

The women who shop with us were never chasing fashion. They are getting ready for a lunch, a wedding, a quiet weekend or an ordinary Tuesday, and they want to feel comfortable and put together without any fuss. Many have been with us for years. We have watched some of them through new jobs, grandchildren and milestones of their own, and we don't take that lightly.

Choosing this way takes longer, and we're glad it does. We pass on far more than we keep. Plenty of things look lovely on the hanger and still don't make it, because the fabric pills, or the fit is unforgiving, or it simply won't last a few good years. What's left is a smaller collection we can stand behind completely.

A new chapter

Mabel is stepping back. After more than a decade she is handing the boutique to Claire, who is bringing in a smaller, more carefully chosen collection built around the pieces women return to again and again. The same careful selection, the same honest advice, fewer things on the rail.

Before that collection arrives, we are clearing what remains of our current range, with savings of up to 70%. It isn't a closing-down sale. We would simply rather see these pieces worn than sitting in storage.

Some things stay the same. We'll keep choosing by hand. We'll keep telling you the truth. And we'll keep believing that a woman should feel comfortable and confident in what she's wearing, on an ordinary day as much as a special one.
